The Catanduanes State University through its Extension Services (CatSU-ES) in cooperation with the Public Relations and Media Communications Services and the College of Agriculture and Fisheries spearheaded the launching of CatSU Bambusetum where one variety of "Giant bamboos" called 𝘋𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳 were planted by the CatSU key officials and employees at the initial planting site, at the back of the College of Engineering, on February 16, 2022.
Known for its resilience, versatility, strength, tenacity and organic
aesthetics in landscapes, bamboos are also considered to be one of
the fastest growing plants in the world for the reason that some of it can grow
up to three feet in just 24 hours. As a matter of fact, giant bamboos are
said to grow anywhere from 50 to 100 feet tall, approximately the height of a10-storey
building.
Few of the countless benefits of bamboos include acting as erosion control agent and reservoir for rivers and streams; considered as sustainable and renewable resource; produces more oxygen than trees; known as strongest building materials; used in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbal medicine (CTM); landscape design and many more. As it is, Bamboo is also recognized as the “miracle plant” considering its various usages and important role in agriculture and human life.
Also present in the event were the CatSU President, Dr. Patrick Alain T. Azanza, VP for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Maria Edna R. Iñigo, VP for Research, Extension and Production Affairs, Dr. Ramon Felipe A. Sarmiento and other CatSU employees.
Dr. Azanza in his message said that this project is a good start to
reconnect with the communities. He also cited the importance of bamboos in
which he mentioned that it prevents soil erosion, increases economic
opportunities as it helps industries in developing various products like
construction materials, furniture etc. Overall, as he mentioned, the CatSU
Bamsetum is considered as a good investment as a whole.
These giant bamboos were donated by the Former Secretary of Agriculture, Sec. Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol, an agriculture advocate. As he sees potential of giant bamboos in the global marketplace, he continues to empower Filipinos through agriculture, hence his initiative of giant bamboo distribution all over the country.

especially to Ms. Aileen Sarmiento, Public Relations Assistant, former Sec.
Piñol, Dr. Adem Nalu V. Rubio- CatSU- Extension Services Director, Prof.
