University’s green push to soilless farming

An innovative greenhouse for indoor soilless farming will soon rise at the University. Hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics are three types of soilless food production farming systems that will be adopted by the institution.

CatSU President Dr. Patrick Azanza together with Taiwanese consultants visited the site where the building is undergoing a major revamp to house the said project.

โ€œThe modernization of agriculture is among the present CatSU administrationโ€™s foremost mission in order to help Catanduanes in its quests for food security and sufficiency,โ€ Dr. Azanza said.

The soilless project will integrate the use of modern technologies to automate the monitoring and control of growth parameters for wide choices of vegetables, fruits and herbs. The indoor system will also be equipped with solar power and LED lights that emits less to no carbon footprint.

Students will greatly benefit in this project as they will be more exposed to hands on smart agricultural systems. Farmers in the island will also be introduced to these modern systems that will form part of the Universityโ€™s edu-tourism component.

A well-managed soilless food production system are said to provide higher yields with fewer needed resources. It is also easier for growers to troubleshoot, isolate or eliminate plants in case of growth problems. #JEPM
