Through the collaborative project called โ€œShared Service Facility (SSF)โ€ of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Catanduanes State University (CatSU), the Catanduanes Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) was successfully launched at CatSU PGT Building on October 8, 2021.
The Catanduanes Fablab is the second facility that the DTI has entrusted to the CatSU now headed by the SUC President III, Dr. Patrick Alain T. Azanza. First is the Food Processing Facility that was established in the year 2017 under the auspices of Dr. Minerva I. Morales. The fablab is composed of five machines and a software such as Markforged Mark TwoCarbon Fiber 3D Printer, ZMorph all-in-one 3D Printer, Anycubic 3D Printer, HanMa Laser Cutter Engraver, Ansys Space Claim Software and Tormach 24R CNC Router with complete accessories and software. The turnover of equipment is led by the DTI Catanduanes Provincial Director Maria Belma Escueta.
PD Escueta said that the main purpose of this is to encourage design and innovation. The fabrication laboratory is part of DTIโ€™s program on innovation ecosystem which is embedded in yet another DTI program called the Regional Inclusive Innovation Center or the RIIC.
She also mentioned that the RIIC is an interagency mechanism for collaboration whose main purpose is to drive the competitiveness agenda through innovation adaption of commercially viable research and of technology as a response to the needs of the community. Further, this aimed to build innovation ecosystems at all levels, to advocate economic transformation agenda through innovation with the actors as the academe (CatSU), the government agencies such as the DTI and the private stakeholders.
The Fablab she added is a DTI-funded SSF which costs a little less than Php 5 million. This was turned-over to CatSU for proper instruction training and production for the utilization of Catandunganons which means that this is open to the community.

Present at the launching and turn-over ceremony were DTI Personnel led by PD Escueta, CatSU President, Dr. Azanza, CatSU- CIT employees headed by Dr. Edwin Romero, CatSU Shared Service Facility Manager , Ms. Ma. Monette DR. Tugay and the trainors and trainees of the recently concluded โ€œFABLAB 101 Trainingโ€.
The Catanduanes FabLab is the fourth fabrication laboratory established in the Bicol Region.
Later in the afternoon during the Stakeholderโ€™s Meeting, the Memorandum of Agreement on the Shared Service Facility Project was forged between CatSU and DTI. PD Escueta in her message said that the MOA will start the journey towards promoting designs and prototypes for the technology-minded people, the Catandunganons.
โ€œLet us discover endless possibilities in creating and inventing through technology-driven innovations via the Fabrication Laboratory. Let us push for innovation, let the ecosystem work among us,โ€ she added.#GZafe
